Hello from GFCT Focal Therapy!
Who We Are & Our Mission:
At GFCT Focal Therapy, our mission is to expand access to focal therapy treatment for prostate cancer by equipping NHS hospitals with the necessary HIFU machines.
GFCT Focal Therapy was established by Graham Fulford after a conversation with Professor Hashim Ahmed of Imperial College. Professor Ahmed highlighted the need for HIFU equipment in all hospitals participating in the TRANSFORM trial. This led to the creation of the charity, with our primary mission to raise funds for HIFU equipment through ethical loans and donations.
Through ethical investments and donations, we are bridging the gap in resources, ensuring that more UK hospitals have access to the technology needed to improve outcomes for prostate cancer patients.
Please subscribe to our blog to get live email updates following our project progress such as machines acquired, hospitals involved and patient stories.
What is HIFU treatment?
Focal therapy therapy is a new, advanced treatment for prostate cancer that targets only the cancer — not the whole prostate. It uses a precise technique called HIFU to destroy cancerous cells. It combines MRI and biopsy data with real-time ultrasound imaging to pinpoint the exact location of prostate cancer. HIFU technology then ablates prostate tissue by focusing high-intensity ultrasound waves on the affected area, causing localised heating that destroys the cells in the gland without damaging the healthy surrounding tissue. Find out more here.
Why should HIFU be more widely available?
52,000+ men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year in the UK.
12,000+ of these men would be eligible to benefit from HIFU treatment each year.
HIFU offers a better alternative to traditional treatment as it is:
- Minimally invasive - No surgery or radiation, meaning a faster recovery and a 80%+ reduced risk of incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
- Highly accurate - Only targets cancerous cells, preserving the nerves, bladder and surrounding structures.
- Repeatable - If needed, focal therapy can be repeated and does not rule out future treatment options.
Who is focal therapy for?
Research shows that around 40% of newly diagnosed men with prostate cancer could benefit from focal therapy. That’s over 12,000 men a year in the UK — yet fewer than 1,000 currently receive it. Focal therapy is ideal for:
- Men with localised prostate cancer (cancer that hasn't spread)
- Those with low or intermediate risk prostate cancer
- Men who want to preserve sexual function and bladder control
- Men on active surveillance looking for a proactive step forward
